Why I Am Drawn to Pre-War Kimono

Every time I visit the market, I see countless kimono.

Yet the ones that make me stop are almost always those made before the war.

It is not because they are old.

What draws me in is the texture of the silk.

In those days, before synthetic fibers became common, silk was spun from silkworm cocoons. After decades, it develops a quiet softness and depth that is difficult to describe.

Then there are the colors and patterns of the Taisho and early Showa periods.

They are bold, yet refined.

Vivid, yet remarkably elegant.

There is a beauty unique to that era that goes beyond the phrase Taisho Roman.

Pieces like these become rarer every year.

That is why discovering one still fills me with excitement.

Whenever I find a kimono that deserves to be passed on to another generation, I am reminded why I chose this work.

Some beauty deserves to live beyond its own time.

私が戦前の着物に惹かれる理由

市場には、毎日のように多くの着物が並びます。

その中で、私が思わず足を止めるのは、戦前につくられた一枚です。

理由は、古いからではありません。

私が惹かれるのは、戦前ならではの絹の質感です。

化学繊維のない時代、蚕の繭から紡がれた絹には、長い年月を重ねたからこそ生まれる、やわらかな光沢があります。

そして、大正から昭和初期の色合わせや柄。

大胆なのに品があり、華やかなのにどこか落ち着いている。

「大正ロマン」という言葉だけでは表しきれない、その時代だけが持つ美しさがあります。

そんな着物は、年々少なくなっています。

だからこそ、その一枚に出会えた瞬間の喜びは、今でも特別です。

「この美しさを、次の世代へ受け継いでいきたい。」

そう思える一枚と出会えた時、この仕事の魅力とやりがいを、あらためて感じます。

美しいものには、時代を越えて受け継がれる理由があります。
